ANKH Place CIC: Where Community Blooms in a Burst of flowers

In Newham, where the spirit of community runs deep, something extraordinary is happening. It’s a story of people taking the lead, building their own tables, and creating a future as bright as their dreams. That’s the energy of ANKH Place CIC, and  Mavis – a force of nature with a heart as big as the borough itself.

To learn about Mavi’s vision for her community is to be uplifted and inspired. She leads with passion, humor, and a deep-seated belief in the potential of every individual. This organisation serves as a hub for action. Providing support and services ranging from community events to mentorship programs, all rooted in a desire to see their neighbors thrive. With a focus on serving the diverse residents of Newham, particularly those facing systemic barriers, ANKH Place CIC works to uplift individuals, strengthen families, and build a more equitable society for all.

“We’re very new!” Mavis exclaims with a characteristic burst of enthusiasm. “Just going into our third year!” But don’t let that “new” fool you. ANKH Place CIC is already making a big noise, powered by Mavis’s decades of experience in social work, community development, and a fierce belief in the power of people.

Mavis’s journey began in the heart of East London, surrounded by a big, lively family and a strong sense of community. From her early days volunteering in after-school clubs to her years working in social care, she always felt a deep connection to those around her. She calls on these experiences to connect with the community.

She’s been a force of nature—a social worker, a turnaround expert, a non-executive director in the health service, and a constant advocate for her community. All this, and she is now bringing all the lessons to ANKH Place to serve as a center for the community that focuses on growing the individual.

But what exactly is ANKH Place CIC? In Mavis’s words, it’s about “growing people to serve society in any way that they see.” And they’re doing it with a unique blend of warmth, creativity, and a healthy dose of “let’s just get it done” attitude. They’re running a Warm Haven, offering meals and support, and they’re facilitating everything from a food club to a Black Men’s Leadership and Engagement program.

And what really sets ANKH Place CIC apart is that they are not just creating programs; they’re building a movement. She gets people involved, helps them develop their ideas, and then supports them to take the lead. As Mavis says it’s all about community organising and having people see themselves in as true a light as they can based on how they want to get involved either directly or indirectly.”

They believe in empowerment and what fuels the organisation is people with lived experience. Mavis is a believer that their greatest asset is experience because what we are dealing with is a group that is best supported with those who understand.

With a clear vision and boundless enthusiasm, Mavis sees the Power to Prosper campaign as a chance to amplify their impact, connect with new partners, and build a legacy that will last for generations. As Mavis puts it, the Power to Prosper is something that creates Synergy, so ANKH Place Cic will finally have the opportunity to grow their people and reach new heights.

You can’t help but feel inspired by ANKH Place CIC and Mavis. It’s a community where everyone is welcome, where everyone’s voice matters, and where, together, they’re building a brighter, more joyful future.
